Encouraging Digital Transformation in the Power Sector

With the rapid growth in technology, every aspect of the world is embracing digital transformation. It has made things a lot easier with minimal energy input and several areas have been harnessed and the power sector is not left out.

Given the rise of the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), there have been transformations of energy systems. The IIoT promises to digitalize much of the world’s industrial processes, including physical infrastructures such as power generation, transmission, and distribution.

It is important to note that digitalizing doesn’t mean the existent structures will become zeros and ones. But that our physical structure will become increasingly integrated with our digital infrastructure.

When all features of the global energy system embrace digitalization, we would see better outcomes for electricity producers, end consumers, and the economy. For instance, the digital transformation of utilities can improve the efficiency of how power is been generated, transmitted, and delivered.

Consumers will have more capabilities and choices surrounding their energy use. They will become more engaged in understanding the sector rather than just paying their electricity bills. Through mobile apps, consumers have control over how they utilise their power. They can also take advantage of lower tariffs by planning activities that consume more power during off-peak hours.

The distribution sector would also benefit as they will easily compute and analyse their data with the appropriate software. They can monitor electricity distribution and track down power thefts.

On the transmission end, digitalizing the power sector will change the way operations are carried out. The affairs at this end will become more transparent as workers will be able to see into the grid’s vast field installations from remote locations.

Furthermore, with digital tools, the operation around the electricity value chain will be enhanced which will increase grid security and reliability. It would also assist physical systems to be more productive and freestanding.

Finally, there is a vast promise in what digitalization can bring to the power sector. Every aspect of the value chain would gain from this development as there would be interaction and transparency in the sector. With digitalization, a new society of power awaits.
