The acting Chairman of the Transmission Company of Nigeria, Sule Abdulaziz has stated that the coronavirus pandemic had greatly affected the electricity sector. Abdulaziz, also the chairman of the West African Power Pool (WAPP) stated that the increase in unemployment caused by the pandemic had significantly increased consumers not wanting to pay for electricity.
In the statement, he said, “payment delays and sometimes delinquency of utility bills by end-consumers is having detrimental effect along the electricity supply chain. With the pandemic effect on the supply/demand side of the value chain and the already existing liquidity crises, strategic options must be deployed to assist utilities bearing the brunt of the pandemic’s negative consequences.”
