The German start-up Boreal Light has just completed a round of financing which has enabled it to obtain 7.5 million dollars to deploy its solar-powered desalination systems in several African countries. The fundraising was organised by the investment company GreenTec Capital Partners.
German start-up Boreal Light has raised $7.5 million in its latest round of funding. The funds will enable the company to deploy solar-powered water desalination systems on the continent. The company installs kiosks to distribute desalinated water in dry areas on the continent. Thie company is already operational in seven countries. In Somalia, Boreal recently commissioned a desalination system capable of supplying 1.5 m3 of drinking water per hour to Oog community, in the Sool region.

The company is also looking to expand its operations in Kenya. Boreal Light intends to install this solution in Turkana, Wajir, Kwale, Naivasha and Mombasa as these areas are arid and do not contain suitable groundwater.
Investment firm GreenTec Capital Partners organised the financing round. Green Tec believes the company is ready to scale. According to a statement from the investment firm, “After six years of hard work, the company is ideally placed to scale up, having established a network of water kiosks in Kenya and completed projects in Yemen, Somaliland and Uganda. The company has also established a presence in South Africa with a local office and projects already completed and plans to expand into the Southern African Development Community (SADC).”
