Urbasolar, a French solar project developer, has commenced the construction of a 30 MW solar power plant in Pâ, in the Mouhoun Loop region of Burkina Faso. The solar power plant will generate 51.7 GWh annually when completed. The produced energy will be sold to the state utility company Sonabel at a tariff of CFA48/kWh ($0.08), this is way cheaper than thermal plant tariffs (CFA130/kWh).
The Pâ power plant is being developed as a public-private partnership between the Burkina Faso government, Urbasolar and its Burkinabé partner PPS. It will be part of a larger 155 MW independent electricity producers solar pipeline intended by the government. Burkina Faso. Another 30 MW solar power plant is set to be constructed by the investment company Naange in Kalzi. Two other 30 MW projects have also been proposed by Africa-Ren and France’s Green Yellow, in Kodeni, in Houet province; and in the capital, Ouagadougou, respectively.
Burkina Faso’s government aims to deploy 100 MW of solar power to improve supply and ease dependence on costly thermal plants. To meet this target, Project pipeline also includes projects with capacities of 20 MW and 15 MW. According to IRENA, total solar PV capacity in Burkina Faso stood at just 62 MW at the End of 2019.
