- The Light Up Monrovia project is an EU-funded project
- It is expected to connect 38,000 homes
Peace Island, a community in Monrovia, Liberia becomes the first community to benefit from the “Light Up Monrovia” project. The Light Up Monrovia project is expected to provide access to electricity to 38,000 homes. The European Union (EU) has provided funding for the project through the Monrovia Consolidation of Electricity Transmission and Distribution Project.
President George Weah and the European Union Head of Delegation Laurent Delahousse were in attendance at the Light Up ceremony. President Weah also urged the community to ensure the safety of equipment and desist from the theft of electrical equipment. He also thanked the EU delegation for the support to the Liberian government.
Speaking at the event, Laurent Delahousse pledged the continued support of the EU and its member states to the electrification of Liberia. He also pleaded with residents to, ensure the safety of electrical equipment. He also urged residents to refrain from illegal connections. “I must reaffirm that, as we just saw in the play, illegal connections to the electrical grid are unjustifiable: stealing electricity is not only an offence punishable by law, it also puts in danger the lives of many, with the risk of explosions and fires caused by the illegal overloading of the grid. And when the electricity comes, it will have to be paid for, so that LEC can bring electricity to more people”, he said.
