The Eastern and Southern African Trade and Development Bank (TDB) has created a $75 million off-grid facility for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). This facility will provide debt financing for SMEs, particularly off-grid renewable energy businesses. SMEs in the broader renewable energy infrastructure value chain that operate in the region will also benefit from the facility.

The facility will consider projects that have a high development impact, significant private-sector support potential, and private-sector mobilisation potential. The projects must provide communities with access to improved, reliable and affordable electricity, efficient transport and logistics services and other social and economic infrastructure. Essentially projects must enhance energy security, create jobs and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
This facility will be supported by the $415 million World Bank’s International Development Association Regional Infrastructure Finance Facility signed with TDB in 2020. Via this facility, the TDB will provide long-term financing for off-grid renewable energy infrastructure.
