- OMVS finances rural electrification project
- Malian, Senegalese and Mauritian communities to benefit from the project
- This is an $81.5 million funded project
The Senegalese Minister of Energy H.E. Serigne Mbaye Thiam has announced the completion of a rural electrification project in the West-African region. The $81.5 million project is financed by the OMVS has provided access to electricity for 200 communities in Mali, Senegal and Mauritania.
While speaking on the project, the Director-General (DG) OMVS, Tamsir Ndiaye has said, the organization plans to “do everything to increase the maximum production to be distributed at the level of the Member States of the OMVS to increase the supply and enable these States not only to have sufficient current but also cheaper current”.
The OMVS, an intergovernmental development organization is working hand in hand with Senegal in managing the Senegal River watershed. The OMVS plans to, increase electricity production and to save the water of the Senegal River. The electrification project is connected to a hydroelectric power station in Manantali in Mali’s capital city.
The OMVS is also currently constructing the Gouina hydroelectric power plant project. The power plant will have an installed capacity of 140MW and is set to be delivered in June of this year.
