The Bui Power Authority (BPA) is set to commission a solar PV power plant in northeast Ghana. The state-owned company has announced that it has connected a 22.25 MWp solar power plant to the national grid managed by the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo). This plant is one of the largest solar plants to be connected to the country’s grid.

Fred Oware, the Managing Director of BPA, noted that until now, the only renewable energy on the national grid has been hydro. “This is the first time we are harnessing the power of the sun and feeding it into the grid to be used everywhere,” he added.
The BPA is also connecting a second solar plant to the grid. The two grid-connected plants are part of a project that looks to supplement energy production from the 400 MW Bui hydroelectric plant. The solar power plants will complement hydro generation during the dry season when the water flow of the Volta River is reduced. The BPA intends to acquire 250 MWp of solar power generation capacity for the Biu Dam Basin.
The BPA is also set to commission another 50MWp solar power plant, as it believes the construction will be completed in the first half of this year. The company currently awaits the green light from GRIDCo to test the capacity of the grid to absorb the power of a new 50 MWp solar plant.
