LIBERIA: End of an Era for MCC Project

• MCC officially comes to an end

• Liberia may apply for another grant if it meets the conditions
• USA task Liberian government with maintaining assets

The Millenium Challenge Compact (MCC), a $250 million project in Liberia has finally come to an end after five years. The closing ceremony had in attendance, the US Ambassador to Liberia, Michael A. McCarthy.

Speaking at the ceremony, Amb. McCarthy expressed his gratitude to former President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf who signed the agreement for the MCC. He also thanked President George Weah for seeing through the successful completion of the project during his Presidency.

Amb. McCarthy also added that the Liberian government can apply for another grant so long as they meet the benchmark conditions. “What Liberia needs to do for this grant is just simple; to protect democracy and to have free and fair trade, and I hope that good governance that Liberia had demonstrated to have this compact will be demonstrated again for another compact” he said.

He challenged the Liberian government to give assistance to the Liberian Electricity Regulatory Commission (LERC) in combatting the rising cases of energy theft. He also tasked the government in ensuring that the gains of the past few years are adequately funded and maintained so as to benefit the Liberian citizens.
