- 4 million meters soon to be distributed across the country.
- Wide range of customers on estimated billing.
- Effective metering among steps to resolve sector issues.
Sale Mamman recently announced that there would be that distribution of four million free electricity meters after the conclusion of the 1 million meters currently being distributed. These four million meters were pledged by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) in assistance to the federal Government’s free metering campaign.
According to a June 2020 report from the Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), only 40.27% of a total electricity consumer population of over 10.5 million people are metered. This implies that a vast majority of electricity consumers in the country are still on estimated billing. The situation begs for rapid metering efforts.
With liquidity squeeze being a major challenge plaguing the country’s electricity sector, it is believed that the metering of consumers is the first step to overcoming hurdles.
