Iroche claims the MHI contract had a negative impact on sector
- Alleges MHI team was incompetent
- MHI managed TCN post-privatisation
Mr. Sonny Iroche, the former Executive Director of Finance & Accounts, Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has faulted the decision of the Federal Government (FG) in contracting the post-privatisation management of the TCN to Manitoba Hydro International (MHI) in 2013.
Iroche who was on The Morning Show on Arise News Channel stated that MHI was not the most qualified bidder for the role. ”Manitoba did not feature top, it was actually another foreign company. But be that as it may, Manitoba got the management contract” he said.
He alleged that the MHI was incompetent and frequently clashed with their Nigerian counterparts. “Manitoba didn’t do a good job. Manitoba pulled Nigerian power sector back”. According to him, the MHI set the power sector back for the duration of its contract.
On the way forward for the sector, Iroche argues for the implementation of a Cost Reflective Tariff and the discipline of market participants. ”The way forward for me is one, get a cost-reflective tariff and let everybody be disciplined and abide by the rules that guide the electricity market” he urged.
MHI was the successful bidder for the management concession contract of the TCN. MHI managed TCN for an initial period of three years (2012 -2015) and was renewed for an additional one year. The FG terminated the MHI contract in 2016.
