Energy Solution Systèmes is set to construct a waste-to-power facility in the city of Bamako, Mali. The facility, which the Bamako City Council is pioneering, will utilise solid waste to generate about 40MW. The energy produced will be injected into the state electricity grid managed by Energie du Mali (EDM).
The project is being praised for its electricity generation potentials and as a solution for waste management in Mali’s capital city. The city of Bamako lacks adequate waste management systems as waste in the city is often left in dumps in the open or incinerated openly. This indiscriminate waste management can be harmful as it can lead to groundwater contamination/pollution and facilitate the spread of diseases.
In 2019, official figures put waste production in the country at 1,600 tonnes per day. Bamako is responsible for the production of 17,000 tonnes of plastic waste annually. The government of Mali is initiating programmes to promote and develop a circular economy to reduce waste.
