Total is set to change its name to Total Energies as it looks to expand its operations into clean energy and electricity. Chief Executive Officer, Mr Mike Sangster, made this known at the 5th Sub Saharan African International Petroleum Exhibition and Conference (SAIPEC) organised by the Petroleum Technology Association of Nigeria (PTAN).
Sangster noted that despite Total’s yearly $3billion investment in clean energy, the company is yet to develop any sizeable project in Nigeria due to the sector’s challenging state. “I think one of the reasons is the nature of renewable projects. We need to have a Power Purchase Agreement for the electricity”, he stated.
The CEO noted that increased stability in the electricity market would enable the country to take advantage of its abundant sunshine resources and attract investors like Total to the solar projects.
Sangster also disclosed that Total is currently working with the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) to eliminate flaring and reduce carbon emissions in Nigeria.
Total since 2015, has developed several solar projects across the country; the company had deployed solar panels at 575 stations to reduce emission, ensuring that its projects across the country are zero-emission.
