UEGCL postpones commissioning to June 2022
- Karuma Hydropower is a 600MW project
- The commissioning of the dam has been postponed twice.
The Uganda Electricity Generation Company (UEGCL) has once again postponed the commissioning of the Karuma Hydroelectric dam. Karuma dam, a 600MW project, was constructed by Sino-Hydro Corporation and financed by Uganda and the Chinese government through the Export-Import Bank. The commissioning was previously postponed from December 31, 2019, to November 30, 2020.
The latest postponement was announced by the Chairperson of the UEGCL Board, Proscovia Margret Njuki. ”The contractor has rectified most of the faults that had been identified, and we are now happy with the wiring system and cables they have put in”, she said.
UEGCL has blamed the postponements on procurement challenges, government delays, and unfavourable weather conditions, amongst others.
