- Energy Minister requests an increase in budgetary allocation
- Seeks an 8% increase to finance development projects
- Projects include the Julius Nyerere Hydroelectric dam
Tanzanian Minister of Energy Dr Medard Kalemani has asked the Parliament to increase the budgetary allocation for the Energy Ministry. Dr Kalemani seeks this increment to enable the ministry to finance development projects in the sector. Some of the ministry’s projects for the 2021/2022 fiscal year include the Julius Nyerere Hydroelectric Power Project (JNHPP).
While presenting the Parliament’s budget, the minister showed that the ministry would require approval for TZS2.38 trillion representing an 8% increase from the previous year’s amount of TZS2.19 trillion. Of the total approved amount, 98% would be used for development projects, Kalemani noted. He added that the Ministry is expecting funding support from external sources, including concessional loans in the amount of TZS18 billion.
“The budget is focused on strengthening oil exploration as well as trading oil and natural gas to enable citizens to benefit from the resources”, Kalemani said.
