- Agreements on GERD collapse
- Sudan insists on AU’s adoption of roles for experts
- Ethiopia advocates for continued negotiations
The negotiations on the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) collapsed yesterday following Sudan’s demand for the African Union to formally adopt the experts’ roles and politically push the negotiations until all parties reach an agreement.
Prof Yassir Abbas, the Sudanese Minister for Irrigation, told journalists Sudan would no longer partake in talks chaired by South Africa’s Minister for International Cooperation, Grace Pandor. He noted that the country would only continue negotiations under the auspices of the African Union. In a statement released on Thursday, Sudan says, ”This round failed to make any tangible progress and to agree on the role, methodology, paths and timetable for experts to play in the negotiation”.
Ethiopia insists on filling the dam for electricity generation, while Sudan and Egypt continue to argue against the impact of the GERD on their countries.
