Lesotho renews supply agreement with EDM
- EDM to supply up to 35MW to LEC for one year
Lesotho has renewed the electricity supply agreement between the Lesotho Electricity Company (LEC) and its Mozambican counterpart, Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM). The supply agreement which was first signed in 2008 with a yearly renewal option cost nearly $8 million.
The EDM will supply LEC up to 35MW of electricity for a period of one year and will guarantee electricity supply to Lesotho. Lesotho and Mozambique are part of the existing South African Power Pool network which enables cooperation between power companies in the Southern African region.
This extension forms part of the business plan for the EDM for a period of four years from 2020-2024. The EDM plans to increase electricity access for Mozambicans, and export electricity to countries such as Lesotho.
