The Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) has hailed Kenya for achieving 75% access to electricity despite the challenges posed by the COVID19 pandemic. This was disclosed at the just-concluded meeting of the Ministers of the COMESA member countries.
According to the Electricity Regulatory Index (ERI), a report funded by the African Development Bank (AfDB), 36 African countries participated in the study. Uganda ranked number 1 for the third time in a row. The ERI report measures the development of electricity regulatory frameworks in African countries against international standards and best practice.
Member states were encouraged to implement the recommendations of the ERI report on improving the regulatory practices of their electricity markets. At the end of the meeting, COMESA appointed a new Chairman, Peter Mathuki takes over from Stergomena Tax.
