  • The Indian Exim bank will provide $40m for solar electrification in Togo.
  • The funds will enable the verification of 350 locations.
  • Togo plans to achieve universal electrification by 2030.
The Exim Bank of India and the Togolese government has signed a financing agreement for $40 million for the solar electrification of local communities. The Indian Exim bank will provide the funds under the International Solar Alliance (ISA), an intergovernmental alliance that aims to encourage greater use of solar energy to reduce fossil fuel dependence.

The funds will enable the electrification of 350 locations via off-grid solar systems in 500 schools. The government will use part of the funds to install 12,000 solar street lights in the localities.  The funds will also aid the acquisition of 2,000 solar-powered irrigation systems and power 500 drinking water supply systems with solar-powered pumping systems.

Togo’s Finance minister Sani Yaya stated that the project is in line with Togo’s electrification strategy and fits perfectly with the National Development Plan (NDP) and the objectives of the Togo 2025 roadmap, particularly in its axis 1, which is to strengthen social inclusion and harmony and to guarantee peace.

Togo has set targets of 75 per cent electrification rate by 2025 and 100 per cent by 2030.
