- The plant will be a 50MW plant
- The estimated cost is N$1,2 billion
The state-owned power utility, NamPower, has issued a tender for constructing a 50MW power plant. The power plant will be located at Walvis Bay and is estimated to cost N$1,2 billion. According to NamPower, the power plant will improve supply in the country and help minimise power cuts. The power plant is expected to be operational by 2023.
While speaking on the project, project Senior Manager Benedictus Mingeli has stated that ”The plant will increase local peak generation capacity to complement increased renewable energy initiatives. It will also reduce the risk of load shedding when imports are not available”.
Namibia’s current power demand is estimated at more than 500MW, and state-owned utility NamPower has an installed generation capacity of 459.5 MW.
