Montenegro plans to deploy its first floating solar plant.
- The state utility EPCG is already in talks with Danish developers for the project’s construction.

Montenegro’s state-owned power company Elektroprivreda Crne Gore (EPCG) plans to construct the country’s first floating solar power plant. The plant will be deployed on the Slano artificial salt lake in the western part of the country. The lake covers 8.89km2 and has a length of 4.4km, and is18m deep.
According to EPCG’s executive director, Nikola Rovčanin, the project will be constructed to meet the technical guidelines of the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) to mitigate its impact on biodiversity. He added that the company is already in talks with some Danish firms to construct the project. EPGC is also constructing a 100 MW ground-mounted solar plant in Montenegro in partnership with Finnish company Fortum.
Montenegro’s electricity supply primarily comes from the 225MW Pljevlja thermal power plant in the north, and two large hydropower plants, at Perućica (307 MW) and Piva (363 MW). The country had only 6MW of installed solar power at the end of 2020.
