- New tariff goes into effect today
- NERSA had previously approved new tariffs
- Municiipal tariffs expected to go up
Following the approval of a tariff increase by the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA), new electricity tariff rates will be implemented today. State owned power company, Eskom will increase its electricity tariffs by 17.80% for Municipalities and 15.06% for direct customers.
WIth the increase in municipal tariffs, municipal customers are expected to see a corresponding increase in tariffs. Customers in Johannesburg, Capetown and Durban will pay up to 14.59% more for electricity consumed. eThekwini Mayor Mxolisi Kaunda, has said, despite the increase in tariffs, the municipal has managed to cap tariff rates for residents.
”Despite all the challenges, we have tried to keep the increases to affordable levels considering the tough economic climate facing our residents”, Kaunda said.
