- Electricity consumption reaches the highest peak
- 8125MW demand recorded
- Total electricity generation stands at 5200MW
The General Electricity Company of Libya (GECOL), Wiam Al-Abdalli, has announced that the company recorded the highest electricity demand with a peak demand of 8125MW. The rise in demand is occasioned by the heatwave sweeping through the country. However, Abdalli stated that GECOL had successfully managed the rise in demand and its impact on the network.
In addition, “2000 megawatts will be added to the network by the end of 2021 and 5200 megawatts by the end of 2022 as new units are being connected”, Abdalli stated. Furthermore, GECOL is currently in talks with contractors on several infrastructural projects to tackle the sector’s challenges. “We’re negotiating with four firms to build plants in Zliten, Derna, and Western Tripoli with a capacity of 5000 megawatts”, Abdalli noted.
He also blamed poor maintenance culture and consumer debt on persistent load shedding in the sector. ”Long hours of load shedding are driven by the need for maintenance at some power plants where damages and sabotage had been committed”, he said.
