- The Kipeto wind farm has commenced commercial operations.
- The farm has a capacity of 100MW and costs $344.
- The power from the farm is being sold to KPLC under a 20-year PPA.
BTE Renewables, formerly known as Biotherm Energy, commenced commercial operations at the Kipeto wind farm, which was connected to the grid earlier this year. The 100MW wind plant is located at Ngong Hills, Kajiado County, about 30 km southwest of Nairobi, Kenya’s capital.
The project’s cost was $344 million. The Overseas Private Investment Corporation (now Development Finance Corporation) provided a $233 million loan while BTE provided the rest.
The wind farm, which is the third wind farm and the second largest in the country, comprises 60 GE wind turbines that supply electricity to the Kenyan national grid via a 220 kV transmission line from the Isinya substation. The SPV created for the wind project, Kipeto Energy, will supply the power under a 20-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with the state-owned Kenya Power Company (KPLC).
