- Eskom to establish nuclear power site
- Nuclear power site to be located in Thyspunt in the Eastern Cape.
South Africa’s National Nuclear Regulator (NNA) has announced the receipt of an application for a Nuclear Installation Site Licence (NISL) from the state-owned power utility, Eskom. The body will begin the public enlightenment process with a scheduled town hearing with Jeffrey’s Bay and St Francis Bay residents by the end of August. The town hearing aims to gain insights from members of the public on issues relating to health, safety and the environment. If approved, the nuclear plant will add 2500MW to South Africa’s national grid by 2030.
The National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA) has said, ”The procurement of 2,500 MW from nuclear power will increase the nuclear contribution to the country energy mix from 2.4% to 5.6%”. ”Post-2030, the expected further decommissioning of 24,100MW of coal power stations supports the need for additional capacity from cleaner energy technologies, including nuclear”, NERSA added.
