  • Oregon Bootleg fire threatens supply to California

The California Independent System Operator (CaISO) has warned that the raging fires have made transmission lines from Oregon “unreliable”, following an alert issued urging customers to conserve energy in a bid to stabilize the power grid.

Officials of South-West Oregon have warned of the rapid spread of the Bootleg fire currently burning in the state. The officials warn of a “dangerous and rapid growth” in Oregon, and more of the western United States as the region endures a heatwave. The National Weather Service stated that the fire had doubled in size every day in the last three days, putting California’s electricity supply at risk.

“The fire behaviour we are seeing on the Bootleg Fire is among the most extreme you can find, and firefighters are seeing conditions they have never seen before”, Al Lawson, an incident commander for the fire, said in a statement. The weather conditions currently aggravate the intensity of the fire. The fire which started on Tuesday afternoon is not expected to be contained before the 27th of July.
