- InfraCo is set to invest $4.2m in the development of 22 mini-grids in Kenya.
- The systems are expected to provide power to 7,000 people.
InfraCo Africa is set to acquire a 40 per cent stake in Kudra Power East Africa, a mini-grid developer owned by the Portuguese entity Rural Village Energy Solutions. Kudra Power is set to deploy 22 solar mini-grids across Busia county, Kenya, near the Ugandan border. The mini-grids are set to provide electricity access to about 7,000 people. The mini-grids will have individual capacities of 10-60 kWp for a total of 512 kWp.
The project is expected to cost about $8 million. $4.2 million of this will be provided by InfraCo Africa, while the remaining $3.8 million is being provided via a grant from the Green Mini-Grid Kenya organization, which is funded by the U.K. government’s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office and the EU.
InfraCo Africa is part of the Private Infrastructure Development Group (PIDG), funded by the UK, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Australia, Sweden and Germany, and the IFC.
