- Nigeria’s Minister of Science and Technology has called for the local production of solar cells.
- Dr Onu says local capacity will positively impact several industries in the country.
The Minister of Science and Technology, Dr Ogbonnaya Onu, during a virtual meeting with the Director-General of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) Mr Francesco La Camera, called for the local production of solar cells. Dr Onu added that local production capacity would decrease the price of solar panels in teh country by as much as 60 per cent, aid the country’s green transformation, and positively impact several industries.
“We want to make our solar cells in Nigeria, more foreign investors should be encouraged to come into Nigeria, which has a huge market of 200million people, ” Dr Onu added. The Minister also called on IRENA to help provide Institutional Capacity building for research in enhancing green hydrogen energy in Nigeria. The Director-General of IRENA, Mr Francesco La Camera, hailed Nigeria’s commitment to the agency, adding that the agency will collaborate with Nigeria in developing renewable energy and ways to boost Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) for clean energy development into Nigeria
