Enel Commences Operation of 140MW Wind Farm in South Africa

  • Enel has started operations at the Oyster Bay wind farm.
  • The project was tendered under the REIPPPP in 2015.

Italian company Enel has commenced operations of the 140MW Oyster Bay wind farm in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa. Enel will sell the energy produced by the wind farm to South African utility Eskom under a 20-year power purchase agreement (PPA). The wind farm is set to generate over 568GWh of clean energy manually.

The Oyster Bay wind project is one of the five projects Enel secured in South Africa’s April 2015 Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Program (REIPPPP) tender. Enel developed the plant through its South African Subsidiary, Enel Green Power RSA. Enel invested about €180 million ($212m) to build the Oyster Bay wind farm.

The completion of this project brings Enel  South Africa’s total installed operational, clean energy capacity to 800MW comprising wind and solar projects.
