Greece’s new wind capacity additions in the first half of 2021 totalled 260.5MW, a 6.3 per cent increase from H2 2020. The Hellenic Scientific Association of Wind Energy (ELETAEN) stated that the country connected 97 new turbines bringing the country’s total wind production capacity to 4,374MW. Of this, 1,775MW is located in thecentral part of the country, followed by 619MW in Peloponnese and Eastern Macedonia and 490MW in Thrace. Greek company Terna Energy owns and operates the largest capacity at 702.8MW total wind plants in operation.
Over 12 businesses developed the new installations in H! 2021, with Vestas being the turbine producer of choice, accounting for 105.2MW of the total capacity deployed. There are still about 550MW of wind plants currently under construction in Greece. The majority of these plants are set to be commissioned with the next two years.
