TANZANIA: No More Deadline Extension for JNHPP

  • No additional time for contractors
  • Nyerere plant to be completed by June 2022
  • To add 2115MW to the national grid

The Tanzanian government has stated that there won’t be any more extension to the June 2022 deadline to complete the Julius Nyerere Hydroelectricity Power Projects (JNHPP). The project, jointly undertaken by Arab Contractors and Elsewedy Electricity Company of Egypt, is scheduled to be completed in June 2022. The project will add 2,115MW to the Tanzanian national grid.

Contractors had previously asked for extra time to complete the project. Through Tanzania Electricity Supply Company (TANESCO), the contractors requested an extension to the deadline for the project completion. However, the Managing Director TANESCO, Dr Tito Mwinuka, stated that the request was denied. “The constructors have been requesting for a time extension, but we have denied the request; our aim is to see this strategic project is complete by June 14, 2022, as indicated in the contract,” Dr Mwinuka said.

Dr Mwinuka added that TANESCO has continued to support the contractors in facilitating the project’s timely completion. In addition, TANESCO has begun constructing a 400kV transmission line to Rufiji and Chalinze to ensure immediate transmission of electricity once the project is complete.
