Africa has at least 770 million people without access to electricity, according to the Africa Energy Outlook 2019 report by the International Energy Agency. This figure represents 38% of the continent’s population. ”By 2030, 50 per cent of the global population without access is concentrated in seven countries – the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Nigeria, Uganda, Pakistan, Tanzania, Niger and Sudan.” the report states.
With only about 62% of Nigerians with access to electricity, Nigeria accounts for 10% of the total number of Africans without electricity access. Nigeria is the second country with the highest number of people without electricity access. The Democratic Republic of Congo is the highest.
On the other hand, Cape Verde tops the list of countries with the highest electricity access, with 96% of the population with electricity access. Ghana, Cote D’Ivoire, Senegal and Sao Tome come next with 85%, 76%, and 71% electricity access.
