  • NAEC seek budgetary allocation for feasibility studies

In collaboration with the Ministry of Power, the Nigerian Atomic Energy Commission (NAEC) is in talks with Russia on the development of nuclear power. The Acting Chairman of NAEC, Prof. Ahmed Yusuf, disclosed this at a media briefing. He also noted that the Commission held discussions with the Ministry of Finance, Budget and National Planning on making budgetary provisions for nuclear power feasibility studies in the 2022 Budget of NAEC.

”We have discussed with the Federal Ministry of Power what we intend to do and how we intend to do it so that they can factor it into their (Power Ministry) energy Master Plan and energy budgeting,” Yusuf said.

Mr Yusuf also stated that the Russian delegation was led by the Vice President of JSC Rosatom, Ryan Collier. He said both countries discussed the diversification of Nigeria’s electricity generation sources to include nuclear energy. ”We are working together, identifying our grid capacity and expansion required in our grid before accommodating this kind of activities.”

Yusuf, however, stated that the FG has not committed to funding any nuclear projects. ”The Federal Ministry of Finance or the Federal Government of Nigeria has not committed itself to funding, for now, so the cost has not yet be identified.”
