EDF Connects 34.5MW Wind Farm to the South African Grid

Electricité de France (EDF) group’s subsidiary EDF Renewables has connected its Wesley-Ciskei wind farm to South Africa’s grid. The wind farm is situated near the city of Hamburg in the Eastern Cape region of the country and has a capacity of 34.5 MW. The facility comprises ten Vestas Wind Systems V126 wind turbines. EDF was awarded the project in the 4th bidding round of the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement of South Africa (REIPPP).

Carl Wlotzka, project manager of EDF Renewables, stated that the grid connection would allow the plant to commence turbine commissioning and reliability testing. He also adds that the plant will commence operations after proving compliance with the grid code as verified by Eskom.

Power Africa, a U.S. government initiative, supported the development of the project. Power Africa provided financing via local partner Standard Bank.
