The Shell Foundation and Odyssey Energy Solutions’ Powering Health platform have chosen five clean energy service providers for a pilot programme to electrify healthcare facilities in sub-Saharan Africa. This programme aims to identify innovative financing mechanisms to accelerate the deployment of clean energy in healthcare facilities in sub-Saharan Africa.
The companies with extensive experience in deploying solar PV projects will have to complete the installations within 3 to 10 months of receiving the funds. They will also source 50 per cent of the funds from the projects from other financial partners.
The five companies will deploy clean energy solutions in health centres in four countries. Nuru will receive a performance-based grant to power four hospitals and community health centres in Tadu and Faradje in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). In the Benin Republic, Aress will install off-grid solar systems in 15 private hospitals. In Nigeria, Havenhill Synergy will provide energy solutions for 15 clinics in Oyo State, while WindGen Power will deploy solar PV for a peri-urban hospital in Bubwa, Abuja. Finally, Zhyphen will deploy a solar PV system for a private hospital in Niassa Province, Mozambique.
the Shell Foundation states: “Initial data and insights will be shared with a small group of donors focusing on the link between energy and health later this year to improve efficiency in the sector, with a final post-project report expected in 2022.”
Odyssey will collect data through its Powering Health platform throughout the project life cycle as part of this programme. This data will provide information on the technical performance and economic model of these projects. The programme is supported by the Rockefeller Foundation and co-funded by the UK government.
