- Mantashe gazettes new rules on license exemption
- President Ramaphosa announced a change to the ERA in June
- The amended regulation will improve investment in electricity generation
South Africa’s Department of Mineral Resources and Energy has gazetted the Amended Schedule 2 of the Electricity Regulation Act (ERA) 4 of 2006. The ERA was amended following the announcement by President Cyril Ramaphosa on improving generation capacity in June this year. The amended regulation was subsequently approved by the Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy, Gwadebe Mantashe.
Under the amended ERA, applicants for 1MW up to 100MW electricity generation projects will be exempt from licensing requirements by the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA). The applicants will, however, be required to register with the energy regulator. The amended ERA will help improve generation capacity in the country that is currently reeling from inadequate capacity. South Africa has seen an increase in the load shedding by state-owned utility Eskom.
