- Jacobs Engineering selected for Koeberg plant modifications
- To carry our essential engineering modifications
- Koeberg is South Africa’s only nuclear power plant
Jacobs Engineering has emerged as been selected to carry out essential engineering modification on South Africa’s only nuclear power plant, the Koeberg nuclear power plant. The modifications, which cost $1.2 billion, will extend the plant’s life cycle, which currently generates 5% of South Africa’s electricity.
The project involves installing six replacement steam generators at the two-reactor plant operated by the state-owned utility, Eskom. Speaking on the project, Jacobs Engineering’s Energy Security and Technology Senior Vice President, Karen Wiemelt, said, “To date, this is the largest single contract for our nuclear team in South Africa, which has successfully completed numerous engineering, procurement and construction projects to support operations at Koeberg over the past 30 years.”
The current steam generators at the Koeberg nuclear plant have been in service since 1984.
