Tesla to Deploy Energy Storage Facility in Partnership with Japanese Companies

  • Tesla will partner with Japanese companies to build an energy storage system.
  • The facility will have a capacity of 6,095kWh.
  • The plant is expected to commence operations in 2022

Tesla has said it plans to partner with Japanese companies to build an energy storage facility to utilise its rechargeable battery in Hokkaido in northern Japan. The storage system will help stabilise the power grid as the use of clean energy in the region increases. Tesla intends to partner with two companies, power retailer and aggregator Global Engineering and Ene-Vision, an engineering firm, to build the 6,095kWh energy storage facility, which will be connected to the grid. The facility will be able to provide electricity to 500 homes. Tesla will deploy its Megapack battery technology for the project.

Tesla estimates that operations will commence in the summer of 2022. Global Engineering will operate the facility and will sell power to the wholesale electricity market, balancing market and capacity market. At the same time, Ene-Vision will handle engineering, procurement and construction of the system. The projects will require about ¥300 million ($2.7 million) in investment.
