Jos Electricity Distribution Company (JEDC) has stated that the utility company lost hundreds of millions due to the activities of vandals. In an interview, the Managing Director JEDC, Engr. Hashim Bakori stated that the incessant cases of vandalism had hindered the operational performance of JEDC.

Bakori noted that about 170 distribution transformers, copper cables, and aluminium conductors were vandalised in the first six months of 2021. He added that the vandalised equipment cost hundreds of millions. “Vandals have become a thorn in the flesh of DisCos in this country,” Bakori said.

In dealing with the rising cases of vandalism, Bakori urged for the creation of a special tribunal for the prosecution of vandals should be established. Furthermore, he urged for stricter measures against the vandalisation of electrical infrastructure in the power sector. He also appealed to members of the public to protect electrical installations and report suspected vandals to the relevant authority.
