- MingYang has developed a 16MW turbine.
- The company plans to install a prototype in 2023.
MingYang Smart Energy has developed a huge offshore wind turbine prototype with a capacity of 16MW. The company plans to install a working prototype of the wind turbine in 2023, with commercial production slated to begin the following year. The MySE 16.0-242 turbine has a height of 264 meters (866 feet) tall, a rotor diameter of 242 meters, and a blade length of 118 meters.
According to MingYang, the 16MW turbine will generate 80,000MWh annually, enough to power 20,000 households. MingYang is one of many companies looking to scale up the size and capacity of offshore wind turbines. For example, GE Renewable Energy had recently unveiled their Haliade-X turbine, which has a height of 260 meters, 107-meter long blades and a 220-meter rotor. The turbine also has a maximum capacity of up to 14MW. Meanwhile, Vestas has announced that it plans to develop a 15MW turbine, and Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy is developing a 14MW turbine.
