- Cost of electricity estimated at 5-8 cents per kWh
- The NPP carried out a pre-feasibility study
- Phase one of the three-phase nuclear project completed
The Ghanaian Nuclear Power Programme has carried out a pre-feasibility study on the electricity cost of nuclear power in the country. In a statement issued by the Acting Director of Commercialisation and Communication at the Ghanaian Atomic Energy Commission (GAEC), Sheila Frimpong, the estimated cost of nuclear power is between 5 to 8 cents per kilowatt-hour (kWh).
According to the statement, the Director-General, GAEC Dr Seth Kofi Debrah, stated that nuclear power was a viable option for economic growth in the country. ”We have some energy generation potentials in the areas of solar, wind, and a number of hydro potential sites, with a single maximum site capacity of about 100MW. There are others we have to look at, and that is nuclear. Other countries have used this nuclear technology to develop, push their industrialization agenda while providing well paid and secured jobs,” Dr Debrah said.
Dr Debrah noted how important it was for Ghanaian industries to take full advantage of the nuclear power project given the establishment of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). Speaking on the Ghana Nuclear Power Programme (GNPP) status, Dr Debrah noted that the first phase of the project had been completed and a Comprehensive Report submitted to the government.
