- MERA embarks on electrification project
- Sets up an initiative to promote electrification through mini-grids
The Malawi Electricity Regulatory Authority (MERA) has set out to improve electrification by promoting mini-grids. Malawi has an electrification rate of 11% nationwide (42% urban and 4% rural). MERA has developed an initiative to improve nationwide electricity supply to meet the growing demand through the promotion of mini-grid developments.
In a bid to promote mini-grids, MERA embarked on learning visits and knowledge exchange sessions. Speaking on the initiative, MERA’s Public Relations Manager, Fitina Khonje, said, “…it’s under this initiative that we have today brought a team of officials from Chipopoma Power of Rumphi on a learning visit to Mulanje. Here in Mulanje, we have Mulanje Energy Generation Agency (MEGA), which has been producing power for sometime now and we believe their friends from Rumphi can learn something from them,”
Khonje emphasized the importance of safety standards in developing mini-grids; she noted that MERA would develop and enforce performance and safety standards for energy exploitation, production, transportation and distribution of electricity supply in the country.
