Ethiopia plans to add at least 17,000MW generation capacity to its grid in the next 10 years. The Communications Director Ethiopia Electric Power (EEP), Moges Mekone, made this known in an interview.
Mekone stated that the country plans to invest heavily in renewable energy for electricity generation over the next 10 years adding that, the projects will cost up to $40 billion in funding. He stated that Ethiopia would achieve its plan by investing in solar, wind, hydro and geothermal power projects.
”We estimate there will be a need to construct around 71 energy projects to meet the energy generation plans,” Mekone said. ”We also estimate up to 40 billion U.S. dollars is needed to meet the ambitious energy generation plan,” he added.
According to Mekone, the Ethiopian government will engage in Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs) to achieve the country’s generation targets.
