The Greefspan II solar PV Plant in South Africa’s Northern Cape is set to commence commercial operations. The 63.2MWp solar plant will be operated by GRS, a subsidiary of the Gransolar Group. A consortium which includes fund manager African Infrastructure Investment Managers (AIIM), Spanish company TSK and South African company Umbono Energy Partners developed the plant. The consortium was awarded the project under the fourth round of tenders under the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (REIPPP).
GRS was the EPC contractor for the power plant. The company installed 188,822 photovoltaic modules, which can produce 150GWh to 20,000 homes annually. According to GRS, the Greefspan II solar photovoltaic power plant created 700 jobs during its construction phase. GRS believes that the plant will cut emissions by 130,000 tonnes of CO2 equivalent per year.
The fifth round of REIPPP tenders has received 102 proposals for the development of 2,600MW of clean energy capacity.
