- Decentralisation would solve grid collapse challenges.
- FG should devolve power supply responsibility.
The Chairman of Momas Electricity Meter Manufacturing Company (MEMMCOL), Mr Kola Balogun, has stated that decentralisation is the solution to Nigeria’s regular grid system collapse. Mr Balogun called on the new Power Minister, Mr Abubakar Aliyu, to develop a path to reposition the sector. “Why do we continue to have a single grid that binds all of us together? We need to separate it in such a way that any state or local government can go into power generation and distribution for consumers within a franchise area should be able to do so,” Mr Balogun added.
He stated that he belies that the Federal government should devolve the responsibility for power supply in the country. Power generation and distribution should be removed from the Exclusive List and moved to the Concurrent List. Mr Balogun stated. Balogun also advocated for extensive stakeholder consultation by the new minister to identify a comprehensive roadmap to transform the sector. According to Balogun, despite seven years of privatisation, there has been no desirable outcome, so there is a need for a roadmap that clearly defines the sector’s targets.
