NIGERIA: Senate Receives Report on Mambilla Hydro Project

  • Senate receives report on Mambilla hydro project
  • The project will add 3,050MW to the grid

The Nigerian Senate has received a report from the Financial Sub-Committee on the Mambilla Hydro-Electric Power Projects (HEPP). The report was presented to the Senate Committee on Local Content. Senator Teslim Folarin, who received the report, stated that some progress had been made despite legal issues that affected the project’s kickoff.

During his presentation, Consultant Muhammad Mustapha recalled that the Mambilla project was in line with the Presidential Executive Order 5, which stipulates a minimum of 30% local content for every capital infrastructure project. “This came about 1.7 billion dollars as the local content potential, which is a very strategic focus for the development of the country,” Mustapha said.

Mustapha further urged critical stakeholders to work together for the success of the Mambilla project ahead of the 2022 construction deadline. The Mambilla Hydroelectric project, awarded to Chinese contractors in a Joint-Venture (CGGC-SHC-CGCC), is located in Gembu, Taraba. The project is expected to add 3,050MW to the national grid and is estimated to cost $5.792 billion.
