Mohammed bin Rashid Solar Park Connects Tesla Storage System

  • The energy storage system is the second to be deployed in the solar complex.

The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has deployed a 1.21MW/8.61MWh battery storage facility at its Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park. The energy storage system was deployed by U.S. producer Tesla. The lithium-ion battery solution is DEWA’s second battery energy storage pilot project at the 5GW solar park.

DEWA’s CEO Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer stated that the “project will evaluate the technical and economic capabilities of this technology within the operational framework of electricity systems in solar photovoltaic power plants.” He also adds that it provides an opportunity to test how energy storage integration can help achieve maximum efficiency and reliability.

The first pilot project is a 1.2MW/7.2MWh facility installed in 2018 by Japanese ceramics company NGK Insulators Ltd. The storage system was connected to the first section of the solar park, a 13MW plant built by US manufacturer First Solar in 2013.

The5GW  Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park is scheduled for completion by 2030. However, about 1.01GW of the 5GW capacity is currently operational.
