- Government to stabilise supply in Northern Uganda
- Ongoing projects will address supply issues
The Ugandan government is currently seeking alternatives to resolve supply challenges in Northern Uganda. This has become necessary as the delay in completing the Karuma Hydro Power Project (KHPP) has resulted in supply inadequacy in Northern Uganda, especially in Gulu and parts of West Nile. Energy Minister Ruth Nankabirwa has stated that the Ministry is working to resolve the challenges.
Speaking during a status tour of Northern Uganda, Nankabirwa said, “Arrangements on ground right now are two way: We have to make sure that ElectroMax generates power constantly as well as energise the transmission lines at Kawanda [to give the region] power earlier than the date of commissioning of Karuma,”
During the tour, the Managing Director, Uganda Electricity Transmission Company (UETCL), Mr George Rwabajungu, acknowledged the challenges and noted the efforts to resolve them. He stated that the $289 million Olwiyo project, a part of the Karuma Interconnection, would be completed by December. West Nile currently has a demand deficit of about 2MW, according to the Ugandan Electricity Regulatory Authority.
