- The City of Windhoek initially applied for a 3.5% increase in electricity tariffs
Residents in Windhoek are expected to pay more for electricity in addition to the increase in the cost of fuel. The City of Windhoek will implement a 3.4% electricity tariff increase for the 2021/2022 financial year. The national electricity regulator, the Electricity Control Board (ECB), has stated that the City of Windhoek approved a 3.4% increment following the application of the City of Windhoek to increase tariffs by 3.5%.
ECB spokesperson Ferdinand Molale explained while explaining the approval process and added that it is looking to implement a new tariff support mechanism to assist low-income households with affordable electricity.
“Distribution utilities normally submit their tariff applications after the bulk electricity tariff has been announced. The ECB then conducts a thorough review of these applications, and only allowable costs are considered. The bulk tariff became effective on 01 July 2021”, Molale explained.
