- Eskom has warned of severe pressure on its power system
- Urges the public to reduce electricity usage
South African state-owned power utility, Eskom has warned of severe pressures on its power system’s network. Eskom, on Thursday urged consumers to reduce electricity consumption to ease the pressures on its network.
“Total breakdowns amount to 14 925MW while planned maintenance is 4 759MW of capacity. Should there be any further breakdowns; Eskom might be forced to implement load shedding at short notice.” Eskom said.
In a bid to stablilise its network, Eskom has increased its emergency power generation reserves. The utility however stated that it is not expecting to implement load shedding but warned the situation may change on short notice.
“While Eskom expects a number of generating units to return to service from breakdowns during the course of the next few days, we urge the public to reduce the usage and to continue using electricity sparingly to assist in avoiding load shedding,” the statement read.
